Welcome to the forum, po716, and to the wonderful world of 2 wheeled FREEDOM as a biker. I'm 60 and have been riding since about age 19. I highly recommend you purchase and read Proficient Motorcycling by David L. Hough and also take a MSF riding class. The MSF riding class will teach you the basics and give you invaluable hands on experience riding a motorcycle, but the book will give you tons more information that you can refer to. I reread this book every few years and I credit the knowledge I gleaned from this excellent book as the main reason I am still riding. I have had a few spills through the years, but this book has kept me riding safely with the rubber side down for the past 40 or so years. Invest in your safety and confidence as a (future) motorcycle rider and get this book!
