as freshmen in college, I got this motorcycle for three things... save gas, build credit, and the fact that anything on two wheels is awesome :D
anyways I took the MSF course and purchased my baby all on her own. I make my own payments on her, I am proud of that. but what troubles me is that whenever someone hears that I got a bike they give me this crazy look and almost every time they say  "your gonna die!!!" or something like that. at first it didn't bother me but after the millionth prophecy it just kinda got annoying... I have no idea what or how to react when people say stuff like that. I've tried to explain safety and all that stuff but all people see when they see that I've purchased a bike is that I've purchased a death wish... anybody else have this problem

p.s. As young and stupid as I am I drive as safe as possible (like every car wants to kill you)

There are risks in doing anything. Wearing full gear, and riding defensively in traffic minimize the risks. Being hyper-aware of your surroundings helps. Make an effort to stay out of blind spots, and make eye contact with the cage drives.

I've ridden over 200,000 miles in my 31 years of street riding. I couldn't possibly give up riding simply because non-riders think it's insane.
Besides. They are just secretly jealous. :D

Look off into the distance (preferably at a mountain range or the ocean) and put on your helmet. Flip up the visor and look them in the eyes again. Say:

"We all have it coming."

Turn and walk away.

My point: If they're going to be dramatic so should you.

Better yet, make sure to walk towards an explosion in slow motion. It will enhance the bad ass effect.

If it's any consolation, I'm 66 years old, been riding since I was 25 and I still hear it, although at my age it's usually, "you don't take that on the interstate do you?" or "I'm afraid to ride thost things," stuff like that. I've never been hurt. I

If it's any consolation, I'm 66 years old, been riding since I was 25 and I still hear it, although at my age it's usually, "you don't take that on the interstate do you?" or "I'm afraid to ride thost things," stuff like that. I've never been hurt. I did hit an oil patch at Ft. Knox on the traffic circle and drop a 1975 Suzuki 185 back in 1975. No damage to me or the bike. Someone backed into a parked bike once and did some damage, but that doesn't count. I hate to admit it, but I dropped a bike once when I jumped off with the kickstand not all the way down and forward. The stand sprang up and the bike fell over. I have made lots of mistakes and had many close calls though, so for sure bikes are dangerous. Unless that person telling you how dangerous it is is a family member or somone important, you don't have to deal with it. I just tell people I've been riding since I was 25 and that's the end of it. No wife here, but a teenage daughter. All she ever says when I show up with a new bike is, "When can I go shopping?" Hush money, I guess.

Lol, I try to keep it a secret for almost 3 weeks because of the same reason that I hate when people say that. I heard it when I go tracking and when I got my lotus exige. So now that most of my close ones found out I had bought a bike. They all said that I had bought a ticket to death. Oh brother are you serious.

All I said was "**** and your suppose to be my love ones thanks for the support and good luck" it's like their wishing you bad luck to say I told you so. But I feel I drive more careful knowing that its a big risk driving a bike. Instead like most people that drive and eat, talk n text, put make up, etc. which is also very risky in getting into an accident.

There is always going to be someone against something your do, i have just learned to thank them for their opinion.. Your not going to change their mind, and they won't change yours.

I even thought at one point maybe they are right and this is silly, but it was all good after awhile. I'm plenty accustom to those "talks" from people telling me how busted up their friend was or something. For me, as long as I know I will be as responsible as possible I will ride!

haha there are some very good points in here. funny as well. I get this very often from family. Riding is dangerous but it's what you make of it. If your ride safe you will likely be safe. A car can be just as dangerous if you are reckless.

This is how I reply the "Wow you are going to die one day" remark:

"Well I'm still here right now :) Not dead yet. Maybe tomorrow, check back tomorrow :)"

put my helmet back on and ride off into the sunset.
